An elegant, high carat, yellow gold ring with a rectangular box setting with at the back compartments, decorated with champlevé black and blue enamel.

It is adorned with romantic symbols, such as the Ivy tendrils on the shoulders symbolizing a faithful connection and continued life of the soul even if the body is dead.

On the inside of the ring two enameled crescent moons can be seen. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the symbol of the crescent moon was primarily associated with femininity, immaculateness and purity of women; this connection was particularly strengthened by the increased depiction of the crescent moon Madonna.

And finally, and most importantly, the two connected blue enamel hearts on the bottom of the ring head, a reminder of the romantic connection of two souls that is hidden when the ring is worn.

16th century, (Eastern) Europe, from a private collection in Prague.

Weight: 4.25 grams
Ring size: 18.5 mm / 8.5 US

Examined by the Curt Engelhorn Center of Archaeometry in Mannheim, Germany, as well as by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands and the National Museum in Prague.
