A two-part pendant consisting of a bow (top) and a cross (bottom). It was made in south Germany or Italy in the late 18th century and is in excellent, original, antique condition.
Pendants like this were mostly worn by aristocratic women, often hung from a ribbon. In religious jewelry, the bow represented the wearer's heart being "tied" or dedicated to God, it was also a sign of luxury and delicacy.
For aristocratic women in the 18th century, wearing a cross was not only a personal expression of faith, but also a public declaration of moral virtue, obedience, and devotion shaped by the ideals of the Counter-Reformation.
Similar examples are shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (here) and the Poldi Pezzoli Museum in Milan (here).
